Established in 1977, Center for New Directions was one of the first programs in the Valley to address the needs of individuals entering the job market after a long absence. CND's goal is to empower participants in transition to achieve emotional and economic self-sufficiency through education and employment.

In November 1994, CND merged with Family Service Agency. While retaining the program scope and integrity of CND, the merger also expanded the continuum of services available to CND participants, whose ages range from 18 to 81. In 1980, CND was recognized as a national model program by the U.S. Department of Labor Women's Bureau.
